OUR DESIGNS

SAFARI-CHIC

Leo & Stripes embodies the essence of Natural African Luxury by balancing contemporary Scandinavian design principles and unique South African materials.

The Scandinavian phrase “lagom” (meaning “not too little, not too much, just right”) is our mantra when it comes to our designs. South Africa’s naturally beautiful heritage is one-of-a-kind and the inspiration and foundation for all that we do.

The result is an exclusive product range with a safari-chic feel - defined by natural warmth, elegant simplicity and modern sophistication; complemented with an authentic African touch.

From Africa, to the world.

OUR MATERIALS

KIND TO NATURE

At Leo & Stripes, we celebrate Africa’s finest indigenous materials that are sustainable and ethically sourced. Meaning, we upcycle natural by-products whenever possible. This conscious approach gives us peace of mind over the origins of our raw materials.

Leo & Stripes only uses eco-friendly ostrich eggs that would otherwise be discarded due to natural causes, such as infertility. While allowing us to add value by repurposing these organic by-products into naturally beautiful statement pieces, this also represents a significant move towards reducing waste and promoting sustainability in South Africa.

All of our décor products are finished with a small signature emblem in the shape of Africa, symbolising that its natural heritage is gold to us.

OUR PRODUCTION

MADE IN SOUTH AFRICA

We spent months seeking out the best carvers and local manufacturers around South Africa, visiting them regularly and building strong personal relationships with them.

While all our products are designed in Port Elizabeth, our primary ostrich egg production is located in the heart of the Klein Karoo in South Africa, known as the world’s ostrich capital. Our exclusive statement pieces are handcrafted by local carvers whose outstanding skills and experience have established them as “eggs-perts” in their field.

They apply methods passed down from generation to generation when they engrave, carve and drill into the ostrich eggs by hand. Our contemporary designs often take several hours per egg to complete.

OUR CARVING PROCESS

OUR QUALITY

HANDCRAFTED ELEGANCE

Creating our products is an intricate and lengthy process. This is not only since all of our pieces are handcrafted with the utmost attention to detail, but also since our raw materials are unique in their composition.

Ostrich eggs may vary in colour, texture, shape and size. This is an inherent quality and provides natural beauty in itself. We always strive to hand-select ostrich eggs that uphold exceptional quality by embracing small, naturally occurring “perfect imperfections” that afford our statement pieces an authentic and organically unique character.

Each product one-of-a-kind and truly “eggs-clusive”.

Leo & Stripes Quality is Handcrafted Elegance.
Leo & Stripes Commitment is Giving Back to South Africa.

OUR COMMITMENT

Leo & Stripes is more than just Natural African Luxury. We are committed to making a positive and lasting difference to South Africa by offering lifestyle products that you can take pride in owning.

That is why when you purchase a Leo & Stripes product, a percentage of the sales will be donated to meaningful projects, and at the same time you will be contributing to securing local employment.

Not only are you investing in a sustainable and exclusive statement piece that is crafted by hand; you are also directly contributing to safeguarding Africa’s unique wildlife and improving the social welfare of local communities.

Julia Lombard, Founder of Leo & Stripes

MEET OUR FOUNDER

A love story, from Germany to South Africa.

Born and raised in Berlin, Germany, Julia Lombard is the proud founder of Leo & Stripes. Although school and work once took her all around the world, most notably to Sweden, India, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates, Julia ultimately moved to Port Elizabeth, South Africa, for love.

Bringing along her curated assortment of design pieces from her time spent abroad, Julia soon set her sights on African décor. From exotic leathers and hides, to unique eggshells and feathers, she immediately became enamoured with the continent’s vast array of indigenous materials.

Recognising the niche opportunity for authentic yet sustainable décor pieces, Julia felt inspired to start her own range of products. Harnessing the natural beauty of South Africa and giving back to the community she now calls home, the concept behind Leo & Stripes was born. While “Leo” pays homage to the African big cats, “Stripes” represents Julia’s favourite animal, the zebra.

Marrying a European design ethos with Africa’s unique materials, Leo & Stripes offers contemporary lifestyle products with an authentic safari-chic feel.
